I found this new to me blog hop called Song Lyric Sunday and decided to take a stab at it. The prompt for today is “let go.”
Yesterday was Stevie Nicks’ 70th birthday. I’ve written many times about how she is my idol, my muse. So many songs she’s written have meaning for me. Dreams is one of them. It is from the Rumors album and was released in 1977.
You want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down
It’s only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost, and what you had, and what you lost
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know, you’ll know
I keep my visions to myself, it’s only me
Who wants to wrap around your dreams and,
Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness,
Like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering, what you had,
And what you lost and what you had and what you lost
It so happened that I was going through a divorce at the time. Granted we had only been married for six months but it was my first love, my first everything and I was devastated. I come from an Italian Catholic family so divorce was not something that came easily. Fortunately, I realized quickly that I had to let go. This became my theme song. I was singing to him, saying…”You say you want your freedom. Well, who am I to keep you down? In the stillness of remembering, what you had, and what you lost…”
Singing that song gave me strength to let go and carry on. Good thing too because a few years after that I met my current husband and we are on 34 years together as of last Sunday (36 if you count the two years we were dating before marrying). I found a YouTube video of Stevie singing the song on one of her solo tours.
Stevie was singing about Lindsay Buckingham and also interestingly, Fleetwood announced recently that Lindsay was “let go” and they are touring with Mike Campbell and Neil Finn. We already have our tickets!
What do you think of my first attempt at Song Lyric Sunday? Any of your favorite songs about letting go? You can check out the rules and other participants here.

I think your first attempt was pretty brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing this song and for your reasons behind it. Music is all about memories, sometimes, isn’t it?
Thanks for playing along! I hope to see you again soon! š

I love that song! I’m looking forward to your upcoming Sunday posts. Music is such a part of dealing with anger, letting go, hope, good times–the whole spectrum of emotions.
