December Ditties – 2018 – Blog(mas) Gingerbread Houses

This is an open apology to my kids.  I’m sorry, we should have been making gingerbread houses every year when you were little but I was “too busy.”  Really, I just didn’t want to deal with the mess because you know that once you were done making them, you were done.

Isn’t this one cute?  It looks like a happy face I think.  At least, I think that way now.  Then I thought, “That doesn’t look like the picture on the box.”

You see, at that time I wanted them to be perfect.  I wasn’t allowing for creative license or little kids having fun.  Kind of selfish on my part now that I think about it.

This one is a little closer to what the picture on the box looks like but it was done by our daughter and her boyfriend (at the time) and they were in high school.

I had some nerve thinking that it had to be picture perfect given the fact that I had tried to make some “special” cakes for them that didn’t quite turn out like I wanted them to:

Look like a crayon box?
Princess castle?
They never said, “Mom, that doesn’t look like the picture” and the cakes got eaten for sure.  Of course, the next year they might have said, “Mom, can I have a store bought cake this year?”  Still, that would have been okay with me since it was much easier to buy a cake than make one.
So again, I say to Amanda, Jeff and Rachel, I’m sorry that we didn’t make more gingerbread houses because as I see now that you are all grown, its not about the houses, it’s about the memories.  Love you!  Mom

This is part of the Blog(mas) series from KaylaAnn.  She is writing about some pretty cool Christmas memories and favorites too.  You should check it out.

  1. I love the Princess cake! I have tried to do things like that with cake, and I think it was a pretty stellar effort for someone who does not do it all the time! I think half the fun of gingerbread houses is seeing what the creators will come up with!

I like the happy gingerbread house! So cute! We never made one when the girls were little, but we did make cut out cookies and decorated tons of those. Doing things like this together makes some sweet memories. 🙂

Aw, been there, done that, and feel the same way! We can’t go back and change things now. They too will feel the same feelings, its just part of being a parent, right? At least I hope so. Did you buy one for this year’s Christmas? PS – thanks for the hot tip on the travel toiletries for stocking stuffers, I finally got shopping and bought a bunch! I can’t wait to see if they’re tickled with them on Christmas morning!!

No, didn’t buy one for this Christmas but the girls mentioned making homemade ravioli on Christmas Day and all I could think of was the mess and how doing it on Christmas would be too disruptive. 😦

  4. They are all beautiful and filled with lots of heart! We never did gingerbread houses, and now I’m regretting it a little bit. My daughter and I did ‘decorate’ her own wrapping paper using a roll of butcher paper, finger paints, and rubber stamps–I would then ‘send’ the paper to Santa so he could wrap her gifts with her artwork. I wish I had photos of those activities. What special memories.

That sounds like fun, Dawn. We tried using potatoes to make stamps one year. There are a lot of things I wish I had pictures of, both of my kids and of my childhood and family. I think that’s why scrapbooking is so important to me. Even if I don’t have a picture, sometimes I can just write the experience down. Safe travels to you in this winter weather!

  5. I’ve never made a gingerbread house. These look too pretty to eat!

Truthfully, they don’t really taste that good, which was probably another reason we didn’t make many. I like gingerbread but you can imagine what it must taste like being in a box for who knows how long and I can’t eat a whole house by myself!

That is so sweet, times two 🙂 I’ve never tried a gingerbread house. I wonder if I shouldn’t? I’ll see if the girls wanna do one.
