September Silliness – 2019 – Weigh/Way/Whey and Spicy

The #SoCS prompt is Weigh/way/whey and the #SeeYouInSeptember is Spicy.  The way I am going to connect these things is like this:

I have been on many different “diets” as a way to lower the amount I weigh.  Some have been successful for a while.  At one point around the early 2000’s I lost 44 pounds and was down to 169 pounds.  That was using the Weight Watchers way.  Of course things happened – don’t ask me what because I don’t remember anything specific – but I do know that I got all the way back up to 238 pounds!

Far cry from this girl who, admittedly is quite a bit younger!

The next thing I tried was Hungry Girl program.  Again I lost about 40 pounds.  Why is it that I didn’t keep going?  Who knows.  I am an Italian and I love pasta?  I am a wife and need to feed my husband who doesn’t like low fat/sugar free foods?  Busy working so I call for take out?  All of the above!

Then my son worked the Keto lifestyle and lost about 30 pounds.  He suggested several times that I try it too but I was resistant.  It’s not a healthy way of eating…too much fat…I have diabetes I can’t have too many ketones in my urine…all excuses.  Finally, around my birthday in March this year, I decided that I’d had enough and it was time to get my act together so I investigated the Keto plan more thoroughly and found that it was actually not that bad and it might even help with my diabetes.  I had a basic set of lab tests done and checked with my doctor who said that each “diet” be it vegan, keto, WW or whatever, have their own proponents but in the end it really is just an individual thing and every body reacts differently.  She said that I should get repeat lab work in September to see where things stood.

I can say that so far I’ve lost 38 pounds since March and 54 pounds since my all time high of 238 (you do the math).  The last time I was at this weight was April of 2006.  I keep setting mini goals for myself and while I know that if I was even stricter with intermittent fasting I could lose it more rapidly, as long as I keep going in the downward direction I’m okay with it.  This is me today.  Excuse the messy hair and the glare from the light.  A bit different than the first picture, no?

My daughter and I have tried many different recipes from the books we’ve gotten and online and most of them have been very good.  I am still not a fan of really spicy foods but I am using more spices in meals than I did before.  Mostly I like garlic and pesto but on fish I use dill.  We do also add some whey protein occasionally.

Well, I think I’ve put myself out there enough for now and gotten both prompts in so here’s the Pick One question:
Spicy or mild?

Congratulations on your accomplishments. My friend works for a clinic that uses the Keto diet to kick start people on their weight loss. It is definitely not a long-term diet, they don’t keep people on it forever for the reasons you didn’t want to go on it in the first place. Hope your doctor does well in helping you continue on your successful path. Your smile shows how happy you are! Way to go!

That’s exactly it, Shelley. I needed something that was going to get me quick results and this has. I am about halfway there and, in speaking with my doctor, everything in moderation. My diabetic marker has gone down quite a bit already.

  2. Wow, good for you! You look great and I imagine that you feel pretty good too. I don’t know much about the Keto diet but I figure as long as it’s healthy, whatever works!

Keto is just limiting your carb and sugar intake really. I try to keep the carbs to under 20 a day. It is okay to have fats though and that is something that goes against my low fat/low sugar mentality. It was unusual at first to put half and half in my coffee instead of low fat milk but the low fat has more carbs! I am not as strict as I could be but it is working.

Congratulations on your success so far!! I think you’re right to stick with slow and steady — quicker weight loss is a high, but this long term work will help you change your eating patterns for good. I had to change my diet a couple of years ago and finally had to stop using the word “diet” altogether. It always made me thing short term. Good luck!!

Thanks Laura. I know it has to be something that I will need to be mindful of my whole life but I really believe that this time I’ll be able to make it work.

I’ve heard of that podcast. I put quotes around the word diet because I know it is a lifestyle change and when I get to where I want to be I will modify my diet, as in what I eat and when. The mind plays a big part in the process.

It’s also hard to admit that I let it get so far OUT of control. Using all my will power to get to goal this time. I’m halfway there.

        Awesome! Good for you!!

I’ve always been big, like after first grade. I got really sick and ballooned out after. But when I moved to Toronto I lost about 40lbs in a year and I’ve been yo-yoing up 10 and back down for a while since then, but I also think it’s how you feel in your body. I’d love to lose more but I feel good in my body right now so it’s not so much on my mind as before

Isn’t it wonderful that you’ve found a diet plan that works for you at the exact time you’ve found yourself with a doggo who needs to go for daily walks? This sounds like a win-win situation to me. Sometimes things do work out for the best.
