As if! I have been absent from the blogosphere lately, at least in relation to posting myself. I’ve managed to keep up pretty much with what other folks are doing, although sometimes I just “like” instead of commenting.
The reason for my infrequent blog contributions is because I have suddenly found myself in a position of being responsible for my own transcription work! The short version of the story is that because of a recent new law in California regarding independent contractors (thanks Lyft and Uber), the wonderful woman that has been facilitating a lot of my typing jobs has decided to semi-retire rather than having to go through hiring me on as an employee and paying me benefits. I don’t blame her and really wouldn’t want to be considered an employee anyway. I rather like working for myself.
As new work comes in, JoAnn has been letting her clients know that there is a reorganization in her business and she is introducing me as a substitute for their typing needs. It is funny because for a few of these clients, I have actually been doing the work but the company did not know it. Fortunately for me, the clients have so far been open to allowing me to continue providing them with the transcription duties, but that means that I have to do a lot more preparation and accounting than I did before. I know I can handle it, it is just a matter of organizing my time and space. JoAnn has been so generous with her time and knowledge and I really feel encouraged about the future.
When Jim suggested the prompts of ankles/hands/feet/fingers/toes/wrists, this song popped into my head.
“Too Much Time on Your Hands,” written by Tommy Shaw of Styx.
“Too Much Time On My Hands”
Got the twelve o’clock news blues
And I’ve given up hope for the afternoon soaps
And a bottle of cold brew
Is it any wonder I’m not crazy? Is it any wonder I’m sane at all
Well I’m so tired of losing- I got nothing to do and all day to do it
I go out cruisin’ but I’ve no place to go and all night to get there
Is it any wonder I’m not a criminal?
Is it any wonder I’m not in jail?
Is it any wonder I’ve got
Too much time on my hands?
It’s ticking away with my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands
It’s hard to believe such a calamity
I’ve got too much time on my hands
And it’s ticking away, ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands
(It’s t-t-t-t-ticking away)
Too much time on my hands
(And I don’t know what to do with myself)
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
Now, I’m a jet fuel genius – I can solve the world’s problems
Without even trying
I got dozens of friends and the fun never ends
That is, as long as I’m buying
Is it any wonder I’m not the president
Is it any wonder I’m null and void?
Is it any wonder I’ve got
Too much time on my hands?
It’s ticking away with my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands
It’s hard to believe such a calamity
I got too much time on my hands
And it’s ticking away, ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands
(T-t-t-t-ticking away)
Too much time on my hands
(And I don’t know what to do with myself)
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
(T-t-t-t-ticking away)
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
(Too much time on my hands)
(Too much time on my)
And the video:
Wish me luck on my typing. See you as often as I can. Gearing up for the A to Z too! Happy Sunday.

That new law is crazy. I know that people and organizations are banding together to amend it or get rid of it altogether. Like many laws like this, it probably was pushed by a few who would benefit from it, but the politicians didn’t understand (or bother to think about) all the unintended consequences that would come from it. I hope it works out for you one way or the other!

Thanks Janis. I am optimistic at this point. I have no choice!

Wow, definitely busy, Janet. A challenge, although your skills are greatly appreciated. As you said on Shelley’s blog ‘take care of yourself.’

Thanks Erica. I am learning and managing to get some craft time in too so all is good so far!

Good luck with your typing. With all this practice, you should be able to churn out posts in no time! 🙂 I am mostly a hunt-and peck kinf of typer. If only I had paid more attention in typing class in high school!

Thanks Laurie. I can type the posts but can I think of the words?

It’s always great when politicians decide to write the rules for games they don’t play…

You got that right. It makes things very confusing sometimes.

Thanks Shelley. As with most things, there will be a learning curve but I’m sure it will be easier than having to learn a really “new” job at this point!

You’re welcome. You’ll do well – congrats that you can still work from home and the work is familiar making it an easy transition!

I was wondering what had become of you. I’m relieved to know that the reason you’re not around is a good one. I have no doubt you’ll do great with this new way of working. Congrats on a promotion, of sorts.

Thanks, Ally. I guess you might call it that. It is certainly a more challenging role. I am determined to figure out how to make time for the things I love to do!

I have been reading that transcriptions work is becoming a big thing. I am not sure why google keeps sending me this news as I have no intention of retraining from teaching at this stage.

Really? Big thing as in a good profession or big thing as in dying? I have definitely noticed some changes in the last 5 years. I hear you about retraining. A few years ago I tried retail work for the first time ever. Lasted 6 months – LOL.

Well, they seemed to think it is a good skill to have. I thought of mentioning it to some of my students but they closed the one transcription school in the Tampa Bay area, so who knows….

I try not to see what anyone else has picked until I put my post up. Even though the songs are the same, most times the post written to go with them are different so it is still a fun read.

I agree 100%! It’s interesting to see the different aspects of songs and bloggers. 🙂

Good luck on your typing Janet. Have you picked out a theme for your A to Z challenge yet?

Thanks, Jim. Yes, I have my theme and even started with my draft posts for every letter. I know it is going to be hard for me to keep up so as much as I can get done before, I will!
