I thought I had this blogging stuff nailed when I took John’s advice and used IFTTT (If This Then That) to simulcast my blog posts from Blogger to WordPress. Things seemed to be working so well until the other day when I wrote a post on Blogger as usual and then checked WordPress to make sure it was there.
It wasn’t so I checked IFTTT to see if the applet was running properly. It said it was but I accidentally turned it off and then turned it back on again. Back on WordPress, there was still no post from June 10. However, there was a notice that said I had reached my maximum storage and it shows that I have almost 2000 posts.
I didn’t catch on right away but then when I looked closer I realized that IFTTT had resent ALL the posts from Blogger to WP going back to 2015!! Looking at the number of posts for each month showed me that November 2016 for example had 79 posts! Even during the A to Z my max number of posts is one a day and not even the whole 30 days! That means that some of those posts have triplicates!
It is going to be an exhausting task to try and fix this. As if that’s not bad enough, on Blogger I notice that a lot of my pictures are not showing up in some posts. Can’t figure that one out either because that same picture will show up in a different post. I’d say I’m tearing my nails off but I’ve never been one to do that. I like my nails.
At this point I’m wondering if I should just nail the barn door shut and start all over again. (Using the #SoCS prompt of “nail” from the lovely Linda.)
Anybody ever have this problem? Got any quick fixes? Would you come find me if I started all over? I’m using this as a test post in a way. If it doesn’t convert to WP then I may just give up on Blogger and only post on WP since that’s where my 198 followers are. I hope my 27 Blogger friends will forgive me.

OH no, that sounds like a huge pain, Janet. I decided to clear up my baking and poetry blog, Robbie’s Inspiration, about a month ago. That involved deleting a lot of photographs as my storage was close to full and I also deleted over 450 posts. I keep finding missing photographs that I should not have deleted but it is entirely my own fault so I just smile and wave like the penguins.

It is a pain and I’ve done the same thing with deleting the wrong pictures but when I have three of the same one it’s hard to know which one to keep. Tiny bits at a time. Gives me something to do and refreshes my memory about some posts that I can freshen up.

Oh, my goodness, posting on WP and Blogger simultaneously! Way to go and way to incorporate the ‘nail’ prompt too! It looks like it’s working for you for WP, I don’t know how to go to the Blogger one …?

Thanks, Shelley. It did work properly this time. I just need to get used to the WP interface and then we should be fine. Here’s the Blogger one if you want to see the difference.

Thanks for sharing! I have a Blogger blog too, but I never post on it anymore. I like both looks – I can comment easier on the WP one though.

Oh my, what a nightmare! Good luck getting it all straightened out. I’m on WordPress.com only and will keep it that way. I don’t need more challenges… going to the new block editor is enough for now.:)

Hi Janis. At least I figured out what it is and I can make some space by deleting the duplicates. Time consuming but also will give me some inspiration for new posts maybe.

Hi, Janet – Unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with Blogger. 18 months ago, I switched from WordPress.org (hosted) to WordPress.com (non-hosted). I’ve never looked back!

Hi Donna! I have always had the free WP and I’m going to keep it that way. I just need to delete the duplicates but I’m going year by year so it’s working okay.

I have always been on WP, Janet, so I am not sure about the problems with posting on both platforms at the same time. Technology problems are so frustrating, I know!!! I hope you get it figured out soon.

At least I figured out what the issue was. Now it’s just a time consuming process of deleting duplicates but maybe that’s a good thing, to get rid of a bunch of old stuff that I can update in new posts.

Wow, Janet, you are an experienced blogger. And all of what you are saying is new and challenging for me. Bottom line, yes, I would come and find you if you started over. Hopefully, you will find a more simple solution. Good luck. No tearing hair out. And, hugs!

I simulcasted on Blogger for several years and got very little traffic there. Finally I just shut it down and told people to follow me on WordPress. It was really messing with the formats of my posts. I think if you were to put a post on Blogger telling people to come visit you on WordPress, they would, except maybe the dyed-in-the-wool “Blogger bigots.” So, yes, make the move.

There’s a plugin to do it, and of course you can’t install plugins, can you? What I would suggest would be to install a local copy of WordPress (you’ll need something like MAMP to install it into) and install the plugin there, back up your online database and restore it into your local version, run the plugin against that database, back up the local database and restore it into your online… Yes, it’s complicated… I could help, if you’d like…

Thought I had left this comment. Hmmm… anyway, there is a plugin available to clean up the duplicates. Unfortunately, if you’re using a free WordPress account, you have to upgrade to a business account, which is really expensive. A way you could do it, which is a little involved and will expand your technical knowledge considerably, is to install WordPress.org on your computer, backup the online database and restore it into your local system, install the plugin on your system and run it, then back up the local database and restore it into your online database. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

Of course your comment went into the spam file 🙂 That sounds way more complicated than I can/want to try, but thanks for the suggestion. I am going through the posts, oldest to newest and deleting. Also deleting duplicate pictures. It may take a while but if I do a month or two at a time I can manage it. Still appreciate your help!
