Jumping through July – 2020

It’s the 4th already.  We will be shooting off some safe and sane fireworks in front of our house tonight and while we have invited another family to join us, and a neighbor or two may be out there also, I’ve told everyone we are staying outside, social distancing and wearing masks.  I’m not taking any chances at this point.

I have been going through my WordPress blog posts and deleting the duplicates.  I could have just tossed up my hands and started all over but I like a challenge.  I am up to June of 2018 and it is going pretty well.  Most of the time there are only 10 or 15 posts in the month so I don’t have that many to go through and I figured out how to toss just the duplicates and not the ones I want to keep so it is going pretty fast.  October of 2018 is going to take a while though because it shows I have 62 posts!  I must have been doing some sort of challenge because I did actually write 30 posts.  Whatever could I have been going on about?

Short one today.  Thanks to Linda for the #SoCS prompt of “Toss.”  Hope everyone has a wonderful, safe 4th of July.

Ok… I left a comment and it’s not showing up here. Not important, but odd even by WP standards.

Why are you deleting your old posts? Is this another thing I’m supposed to be doing in light of WP’s new block editor? I’ve been doing something similar on Twitter, but just because too many negative people are not my vibe. I wish you well with your project. Carry on, my dear. Hope your 4th was a good one.

Hi Ally! I don’t know what it is about WP but sometimes the comments from you get put in the trash/spam and sometimes they don’t. I was deleting the old posts because they were duplicates. I have been simulcasting (posting on Blogger which then gets posted to WordPress via IFTTT (If This Then That). The duplicate (and in some cases triplicate) posts were taking up all my storage space on WP and I wouldn’t have been able to post anymore unless I paid for a site. It doesn’t have anything to do with the new block editor, which by the way I’m not a fan of.

Thanks for the explanation. I was worried I’d missed some memo about something I was supposed to be doing. I’ve not tried the block editor. I use the classic editor and am happy to be old school.

  3. Janet,

Cleaning up one’s blog is hard work. In the beginning I didn’t know the importance of this or did I know such things like broken links are a nightmare. It took me quite awhile to straight the broken links out and I found a handful of posts that didn’t transfer from Blogger to WP which I had to manually inset. Things are looking pretty good but every once in awhile I find a post that needs work. Take it slow and easy, you’ll get it done soon enough. Happy belated Independence Day, my dear!

Yes, Cathy, I figured first I’d get rid of all the duplicates and then I’d start going through the posts to check for things like missing/broken links and clean up that. Kind of interesting actually going back to posts from a few years ago. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Happy 4th of July, Janet.
I’m very interested in how you are going through your WordPress duplicates. What WP plan do you have? Do you have a plugin? Are you able to see the multiple copies of your images that WP makes? I’d greatly appreciate if you would share your process with this.

Hi Donna! I have the free version of WP and at first I just deleted the posts from 2014, 2015 and 2016 completely because they were so old and it was before I was simulcasting from Blogger. Once I deleted the posts and emptied them from the trash I went in and deleted all the pictures from those years as well. I’ll write a blog post about it and use pictures to describe because it will be easier than trying to write it all out here. Stay tuned!

Let us know when you figure out what was going on in October. Lol. I’m very curious.

Cheers to safe festivities. So many folks around here couldn’t care less. I say mask it up and enjoy :).
