You are going to get two posts from me today because I can’t connect the prompts from Song Lyric Sunday and August Break. Hope you don’t mind.
First up is Song Lyric Sunday as curated by Jim Adams. I decided to go with a pretty old show, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father. It was on from 1969 to 1972 and was a cute show about a young boy, Brandon Cruz, trying to find a wife for his widowed dad, Bill Bixby. There were a lot of up and coming actors on the show and it was a feel good kind of program. Each episode started with a conversation like this:
The song was written by Harry Nilsson and while I’m not a big fan of his, the song fits perfectly.
The lyrics are short:
He’s a warm hearted person who’ll love me till the end.
People let me tell you bout my best friend,
He’s a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.
People let me tell you ’bout him he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talkin’ man to man or whether we’re talking son to son.
‘Cause he’s my best friend.
Yes he’s my best friend.
Bill Bixby went on to play David Banner (the Hulk) and sadly died at age 59 from prostate cancer. He also had a brief show, The Magician, and was on My Favorite Martian with the late Ray Walston. Personally, I always thought Mr. Bixby was a handsome guy so I enjoyed watching him on all the shows.
And there’s your #SLS. Make sure to pop over and see the other participants in today’s song fest.

I love the dialog intro and how it’s just as appropriate now as it was then.

The TV show was based on the movie with Glen Ford and Ronny Howard. We always liked the show, as well as Bill Bixby. I remember seeing him in a religious TV show one night when I was waiting to watch the signoff. He was also in a PBS presentation of a play called “Steambath” where the steambath represented the afterlife and the attendant was God. He was a good actor.

I didn’t know about the movie. That sounds like an interesting play. He was a good actor. Sadly, a lot of the good ones go too soon.

I remember BIll Bixby. Not sure I watched the show consistently but the beginning seems familiar.

It was cute to see his son try to fix him up with different girls.

Me too, Jill! Sad that he died relatively young.

I vaguely remember the show but that clip looks so wholesome, like the kind of dad a kid could learn a lot from. I liked Bill Bixby also and thought he was cute. Nilsson’s song is perfect for the theme song.

It was cute to see his son trying to fix him up. The opening scenes were often with questions from Brandon to his dad.

Great job on the prompt; I’m a huge fan of Bill Bixby – when he was the magician he was so handsome. The hulk, not so much 🙂 Love the song, it is a fun one that gets stuck in my head as an earworm EVERY time! Happy Sunday!

Yeah, right about the Hulk. The Magician was only on for a year but Bill Bixby was an amateur magician himself.

Brandon Cruz’s family lived down the street from me. My brother knew his brother.I think Brandon lived in L.A. while filming. Poor kid sufferred from other kids here. Seems like everyone had a story. He didn’t deserve it.

Interesting! I didn’t really read up on his life. Thanks for sharing that.
