A to Z 2021 – O is for Ocean Beach and the Orpheum Theater

Ah, the ocean. Being a Pisces, it really is one of my happy places and I am ashamed to say that I don’t get there as often as I could. For a while during the pandemic even the parking lots were closed so you couldn’t even stay in your car to watch the waves or the sunset.

Ocean Beach is a great spot to go to if you want to see the Pacific Ocean.

It is across the street from the end of Golden Gate Park and when I was young there was a small amusement park nearby, Playland at the Beach. Sadly that closed in 1972. Up the street is what used to be the famous Cliff House, which also sadly closed this year due to the pandemic and leasing issues.

The view from the Cliff House dining room. These rocks are usually full of seals.

I can sit for hours looking at the waves crashing against the shore and watching the sun set.

And here’s a quick video. Posting these pictures makes me want to go back to the beach this weekend!

“O” is also for the Orpheum Theater. This is one of the easiest venues for us to get to because it is right across the street from the BART station. We saw a few shows there, one of which was Rain, the Beatles Tribute.

The theater only sits about 2000 people so most every seat is a good one. I went on the website while researching for this and I see that they are starting to open up again. There is a new play about the Temptations called “Ain’t Too Proud” that looks like it might be good. I think I’ll keep my eyes on that for sure.

Second full week of the A to Z done! Have a nice weekend. See you Monday for “P.”

I like how you say “see the Pacific Ocean”! Yes, it’s a looking beach, and maybe a let the tide wet your toes beach, but NOT for swimming! So many ignore the warning signs, mostly surfers. I remember Playland at the Beach. I remember the salt water taffy sold right along there too. We’d usually visit Ocean Beach on trips to the zoo, if just for a bit. Sorry to hear the Cliff House closed.

Yes! The tide pull around that area is really strong so I never go in farther than knee high. Wish I had gone to Playland more. I was only there a couple times.

  8. Excellent post for O, nice job, Janet. I also love your photos of the ocean and your video. Thanks for sharing. I don’t know how you could stay away from the beach. I hope things continue to open up for your state and that you can go back to a show again soon.

It is literally maybe 10 to 15 minutes away. I’m ashamed I don’t get there more often, especially now that I can get there in the middle of the week when everyone else is working. Gotta change that!

I miss the ocean and — thanks to vaccination — may try to travel there this year. Love the Orpheum photos — and that Beatles concert takes me back! https://mollyscanopy.com/2021/04/orange-juice-can-curlers-and-on-the-roof-suntans-atozchallenge/#comments

Janet, I am a Pisces as well, and the ocean brings me joy and peace.
Preventing people from taking a walk at the beach, especially during a pandemic, feels cruel. I understand they need to avoid crowds, but still. What are people supposed to do in a city? Not everybody has a garden, and parks were probably closed, too?

Yes, the parks were closed too. I thought the same thing, I mean, at least leave the parking lots open so you could sit safely in your car and enjoy.

This is all so west coast trippy to me. Names I’ve heard of, but places I’ve never been to. And now won’t be going to one, I guess.

I had fun visiting the Cliff House and playing old electronic games at Musée Mécanique (which has moved elsewhere in San Francisco) and seeing the ancient-looking ruins of the Sutro Baths.

I think the Musee Mecanique was over by Fisherman’s Wharf. If you look at my “F” there is a picture of it there. I didn’t see the Sutro Baths but remember Playland very well.
