My theme for this year’s A to Z Challenge is the A to Z of Democracy. This is your trigger warning. If you are going to be bothered by my descriptions of what I believe America should look and feel like, please stop reading and come back next year when my topic may go back to music or scrapbooking or interesting tidbits. Please respect my space and DO NOT leave disinformation or inflammatory statements in the comments. It’s my blog and I will delete them. Thanks for your cooperation.
| Voting Rights | Voter Suppression |
| Right to participate in elections Ability to make your own choices for leaders | Taking away the right to vote Making it difficult for certain people to vote |
And this is another topic that is SO scary and totally unfair. To make women go through so many hoops to be able to vote is absolutely voter suppression. I have a passport so it’s okay for me but not everyone gets one of those. We had to show lots of ID when getting our “real id” driver’s licenses and it was a pain. Fortunately I had all the documents but a lot of folks don’t.
I have to laugh about old Caitlin Jenner and her dilemma about the passport saying that she is a male. And yet she still likes #45. He doesn’t seem to care too much about her problem. Probably because he knows she still approves of him regardless.
And knowing that registering to vote puts you in the “system” why would “illegal aliens” want to get themselves on the books like that. It doesn’t make sense. But then again, a lot of things going on now don’t make sense.
As always, credit goes to Speaker Hakeem Jeffries who gave an impassioned speech on the floor of the House of Representatives at the beginning of the 218th congress.

Maybe the administration wants to make sure that only 1/3 of the population can vote for them again

Reading this from a Swiss point of view, the whole issue feels very different. In Switzerland, you’re registered with your local municipality, and whenever you move or change your name, you’re required to update your details. Voting materials are then sent to you automatically; no separate registration, no extra steps tied to elections themselves.

It is basically that way here too. All the states have their own voter registration systems. For example, I registered once when I turned 18. Then I had to re-register whenever I moved and again when I got married but all I needed to show was something with my address and photo ID. For the last 30 years nothing has changed so I haven’t had to register and my ballots get mailed to me. What this new bill is requiring is proof of citizenship, like your birth certificate, and it is to stop new people from being able to register. It will make it much more difficult for students, women, trans folks to get the documentation needed. They want white men to vote.

Would I ever have thought that women could possibly lose their right to vote in my lifetime? It’s bad enough that many women do not understand about what the SAVE act really would do. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

It is interesting that all the restrictions seem to be against women.

My passport is long expired, and was in my maiden name anyway. I read some women are changing their ids back to their maiden names. I never could understand Caitlin Jenner’s support of Trump. I live in Oregon, which is 100% vote by mail. They do check signatures. I knew someone, a young woman, who changed her handwriting (as some young women like to do!) and they sent her a notice to come in and verify the ballot was signed by her, and update her signature.

They just know they are going to lose so they have to do something. We just have to make sure we get things fixed when we get back in. So much to do!

Voter suppression of women incenses me especially – when I grew up in the 60-70’s, it seemed that Women’s Liberation was going to smash all the glass ceilings once and for all, also that war was finished with – who knew we would end up here…
I will be back to read more but I still have 3 meaty post to write before Monday night… https://how-would-you-know.com/a-to-z-2026/
