A to Z Challenge – 2019 – K is for Kits

I have to be absolutely honest.  I am a crafty person but sometimes I need a little kick start to get the creative juices flowing.  Occasionally I use kits to fuel the spark, like these from Paper Wishes.  The kits include the blank cards and the extra pieces to decorate it with.  Sometimes I follow the directions and then add or take off things to suit me.  This kit came with the metal stencil of the baby hands and feet that I can use over and over again.

In the kit below there is a “jar” card to make for Christmas.  I found it as I was looking for jar examples for yesterday.

I absolutely loved the colors in this tropical kit from Pinecone Press.  While there are directions to make cards on this one as well, they are not as detailed as the ones in the Paper Wishes kit and there are fewer embellishments.

This gives the diagrams of how you can cut the papers to make the cards, but some of those papers are so pretty I’d like to use them for something else!  They also don’t have any sentiments on them so I am able to make them into any kind of card I want, birthday, anniversary, friendship, etc.

Same with these ones from Photoplay.  The basic card examples are there but there is a lot of room for interpretation.

This is a kit for a wedding mini-album.  The form is there and there are some stickers and things to decorate it with but it is pretty easily adaptable to whatever I choose to make with it.

I do have to say that with every card or album I make, I always add something or change the design a little so that I feel comfortable selling them as one of my creations.  I give credit to the company that I got the kit from as well.  I mean, anyone can get a kit and make the cards so I have to make them my own in some way.

Now you know my secret.  Hope it hasn’t tarnished my image as a creator but I have to be truthful in my business.  I wouldn’t feel right if I wasn’t.

We are rapidly moving through the alphabet!  Hope you are enjoying this year’s series.  Please go visit some of the other participants in the 10th Anniversary A to Z Challenge.

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – J is for Jar

I was walking down the aisle at Michaels one day and I saw this package:

I know jars are a popular item and I immediately thought about turning it into a mini-album about cooking or family recipes.  This is what I came up with:

There are pages inside so you can add pictures and special stories about those treasured family cooking memories.

I thought this sentiment worked with the theme.

I was pleased with how the embellishments came out on the front.  I was even more pleased when someone bought it!

Because I liked the way it turned out, I traced the shapes on cardboard so I could make another one.  It’s in my “to be made” pile.  LOL

Ever been walking down the aisles of Michaels and find something you weren’t expecting?  Have any special family recipes you’d like a mini-album for?  Come back tomorrow for “K” and go visit the A to Z family.

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – I is for Ideas

“But Janet, where do you get all your ideas for these cards and things you make?” you may (or may not) ask.

Let me tell you!

Some of them come from books and magazines.  I have one book that is called “A Card A Day” and I’ve been thinking about giving that a try, just like I did my 365 pictures.

Most of the magazines I buy come with extras, usually stamps.  This one has some great things I can use for Father’s Day cards with the motorcycle and the golf clubs.  Inside are examples of cards that they made using the stamps but usually I do my own thing.

I liked this one because of the woman in the tub.  Lots of ideas for Mother’s Day here.

Here is a card I made using the table and chairs and the word “Relax” for the front.  The table and chairs and the Relax message are on foam tape so it adds dimension to the card.

and on the inside I used the fishing gnome to make a retirement card.

Some of the magazines come with inserts that have pictures you can cut out and papers that match.  If I hadn’t been so busy getting the A to Z ready and moving into the studio, I would have tried to make some Easter cards with a few of these, especially the bunnies and flowers.

I also collect CDs that have pieces I can print out and make into cards or use in albums.  Some have sentiments to put inside.  Debbi Moore is one of the companies that I get them from and Paper Wishes is another.  Each one of the CD’s has hundreds of designs and elements that can be adjusted to fit whatever I need.  I just got the Rock and Roll one and I’m thinking I can use some of the things in my concert album.

So many ideas, so little time!  What inspires your creativity?

Visit some of the other A to Z participants in this 10th Anniversary round!  You can also find them on Facebook  See you tomorrow with “J”

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – H is for Honey Do

Some people say that men are the hardest to find cards and gifts for since most of the things out there usually have flowers and frills on them.  I take that into consideration and try to make some more “masculine” looking things.  Here is one of them.

Everyone knows about the “Honey Do” lists we women make for our husbands/significant others, etc.  This one has a little twist.

Inside are four pockets filled with tickets that can be redeemed upon presentation.

The tickets are for things like “Take me out to dinner,” which seems like a reasonable “Honey Do,” but the rest of it says, “I’ll pay the bill.”  Another is “Rent me a movie…of your choosing.”

There are also some blank tickets so you can write in your own “Honey Do’s” – for whatever suits your fancy.  I’ll bet you could come up with some really great ideas for your special guy.

You could also put some tickets to his favorite sporting event or concert in one of the pockets.  Very customizable.

What do you think?  Have a “Honey” who needs a to-do list?  Find it and other fun stuff on my Etsy site.

We are working our way through the alphabet with the A to Z gang pretty nicely I think.  I am thankful that I’ve been able to keep up, especially since I wasn’t at all prepared to begin with.  Make sure to check some of the other peeps out.

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – G is for Gift Card Holders

We begin week two of the A to Z Challenge with the letter G.  I am using it to show my Gift Card Holders.  Giving someone a gift card to Starbucks or really anywhere has become a normal thing to do nowadays.  When I worked at Michaels whenever someone bought a gift card they asked if we had holders for them.  We didn’t always.

Here are some examples of a few different types I’ve made:

Around Christmas time I made these cute ones.  As you can see, there is a brad holding the top on and if you swivel it, you can slip a gift card in the pocket.

Isn’t he cute?

These are called Slider cards because you pull on the ribbon and the card slides apart to reveal two sides, one for a message and one for the gift card.

The slider cards are not in the Etsy site at the moment since Christmas has passed but I will be making more of them for baby gifts and birthday gifts so stay tuned!

For birthdays, I made some in the shape of cakes and ice cream cones:

I just realized that these could even be used for wedding gifts.  I would leave off the candle and add another layer to the cake part or put a wedding topper on instead of the candle.  Watch for something like that to show up too!

I used some textured paper on the cones for some of these and it really gives it a “waffle cone” feel.

And for those people who give Starbucks cards, there are some in the shape of mugs:

All of these have special envelopes that I have made out of coordinating papers.  They can also be custom made if you like particular colors or want something stamped on the front.

Hopefully you are enjoying these examples of the different things you can do with card making.  I know I am enjoying visiting all kinds of interesting bloggers during this challenge.

Song Lyric Sunday – 4/7/19 – Burn

Jim has given us the words Burn/Fire/Flame for our #SLS challenge this week.  I am working on the A to Z Challenge and so this is a short one and it is very late as we went to the San Francisco Giants game today.

Nickelback is a band that gets some bad publicity occasionally.  I don’t like all their songs but we did go to see them in concert and this is a video I took of their song, Burn It To The Ground:

Lyrics:

Burn It to the Ground
Well it’s midnight, damn right, we’re wound up too tight
I’ve got a fist full of whiskey, the bottle just bit me
Ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh
That shit makes me bat shit crazy
We’ve got no fear, no doubt, all in balls out
We’re going out tonight
To kick out every light
Take anything that we want
Drink everything in sight
We’re going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight
Ooooohhhhhhh
We’re screaming like demons, swinging from the ceiling
I got a fist full of fifties, the tequila just hit me
Ooooohhhhh
We got no class, no taste, no shirt, and shit faced
We got it lined up, shot down, firing back straight crown
We’re going out tonight
To kick out every light
To get anything that we want
Drink everything in sight
We’re going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight
Ooooohhhhhhh
Ticking like a time bomb, drinking till the nights gone
Well get you hands out of this glass, last call my ass
Weeelllll no chain, no lock, and this train won’t stop
We got no fear, no doubt, all in balls out
We’re going out tonight
To kick out every light
To get anything that we want
To drink everything in sight
We’re going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight
Ooooohhhhhhh
We’re going out tonight
To kick out every light
To get anything that we want
To drink everything in sight
We’re going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – F is for Feathers

We’ve made it through one week in the A to Z Challenge!  Fortunately I have been able to keep up and tomorrow I’ll have all day to prep for next week and hopefully beyond.  At least I have some idea of what I’m doing for the rest of the letters, except for a few.

Today’s example from my card making file is Feathers.  This first one is to encourage a friend who may be having some hard times.  “Don’t let life ruffle your feathers” it says on the outside.  There are several different types of feathers on the front of the card and the inside has more.

You can’t really tell on this one but there are sparkly gems on some of the dots and the gold one is called a Dazzle sticker.

And the envelope.  I really have to work on the lighting I have in the new studio if I’m going to be taking pictures.  They come out too dark.  I am using my phone because it takes the best close up pictures but I can see some experimenting is in order.

The second example is a birthday card.  A little different with the types of feathers, all of which are made from paper.

The inside and the envelope.

Aren’t they fab?  Please take a minute to visit my Etsy shop.  The pictures there are much better, at least for now.  Click on the links above.  Visit the other A to Z’ers and congratulate them on the week.  Thanks to Linda for giving us an “F” word (fab) for the #SoCS!

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – E is for Easel Card

As part of the A to Z challenge this year I am going through my repertoire of cards, mini-albums and other paper crafts that I create.

Today is the letter E and in my case E is for Easel.  These cards are normal appearing at first.  The front has a large focal point and the inside has a message that is propped up on foam tape to make it pop up…

but with a simple twist it turns into an easel that will stand by itself.  The front is held up by the message inside and it can be displayed proudly on any table or mantle.

Here’s another example.

Of course they both have envelopes that match.

And there are a couple of other ones on the Etsy site.

Have a look at some of the other participants in the A to Z challenge and come back tomorrow for the letter “F”!

Cover Reveal – Mistaken Identity Crisis

So very happy to be part of the cover reveal blog tour for my friend, James J. Cudney’s newest book, “Mistaken Identity Crisis.”Ā  This will be the fourth installment in the Braxton Campus Mystery series and while I haven’t read it yet, I am sure it will be just as exciting as the first three.
I first became aware of Mr. Cudney through a blog post.Ā  I can’t even remember where, but I saw that James mentioned something about a 365 series he was doing on his blog and since I had just finished a 365 picture project it caught my attention.Ā  Through the last year and a half we have kept up the blogging relationship and I have watched Jay’s writing advance rapidly.Ā  When we first “met” he had not yet finished his first book, “Watching Glass Shatter.”Ā  That was a wonderful story about family relationships and unusual circumstances.Ā  His second book, “Father Figure” came right after and was a story about two women, generations apart, who have a connected past that is told in successive chapters.Ā  Both of those novels had twists and turns and I know that Jay is a fan of the mystery genre so it came as no surprise when his first Braxton Campus Mystery, “Academic Curveball,” made its debut.
That was followed rapidly by “Broken Heart Attack” and the recently released “Flower Power Trip.”Ā  Jay has a great way of telling his stories and keeping you turning the pages.Ā  All of the novels are centered around Kellan Ayrwick, his family and Braxton College.Ā  The members of the town come in and out and he has a feisty grandmother who helps/hinders him in his efforts to figure out what’s going on and a sheriff who doesn’t really appreciate his “interference.”Ā  There are always some unexpected things happening and I have yet to figure out “who done it” before he tells us.Ā  He develops his characters well and you easily begin to care about what happens to them.Ā  I am looking forward to reading the next in the series,

“Mistaken Identity Crisis” is available for preorder onĀ Amazon

You can read more about James at his website:

A to Z Challenge – 2019 – D is for Duckie

Making my way through the alphabet with the cards and crafts that I make, today is D for Duckie.

A bunch of yellow ducks adorn the front of this card made to celebrate the birth of a baby in the family.  I really like the colors and they could be for either a boy or a girl, although truthfully I think boy when I see it.  Is that gender typing?

There is a yellow ribbon down the front as well to give a little dimension.

As always room to write inside and the envelope has a boat to match.

Simple one today.  Trying my best to keep up until I have some time on the weekend.  Check the Etsy site to see more pictures.  Make sure to catch up with others on the A to Z train and come back tomorrow for “E.”
