Welcome to the letter C in the A to Z Challenge for 2018. This year I am alphabetting my way through Michaels Arts and Crafts store.
I said I wasn’t using crafts as a word and I covered coupons in the A is for App post. I’m choosing candles for my letter C. We have walls and walls of these jar candles in all different scents. They have fun names like Sunset Lily, Coral Amber, Lilac and Hyacinths, Vanilla and Macaron, etc. This was just one wall. Aren’t the colors pretty?

Turquoise Waters…doesn’t that sound beachy? |
There are the standard stick taper candles.
And pillars.
Tea lights
 |
Ginger Citrus |
and wax melts that don’t have a wick but you put them in a holder with a tea light underneath and as the wax melts, it gives off a great scent.
There are also some interesting candle holders as well. This is a pretty silver vine treatment that was a good foot and a half long,
 |
I think there was room for five or six taper candles in this holder. I couldn’t fit it all in the picture. |
with a matching pillar holder.
We even have the wick materials so you can make your own candles if you want.
Today you get an A to Z two-fer because the other Big C at Michaels is CLEARANCE!
There is one whole aisle of clearance things and you can find some pretty good deals here. They take items from all over the store and put them on these shelves so it is a little bit of everything. You could spend half an hour just in this aisle!

I think I see some washi tape rolls in this picture! This must be from the planner section. |
 |
The wooden deer head would make a great Father’s Day gift for a hunter, don’t you think? Stain or paint the background and then decoupage a picture of you and the kids in the center? Actually, this was probably leftover from Christmas and could have been used as Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. |
 |
This looks like some clearance from the baking section…cookie cutters for sure. |
There are also usually a few spots throughout the store with clearance on the leftover holiday decorations. Here are some from Valentines Day.
This is what was left after one of the last Christmas sales…slim pickings!
Sometimes if there are a lot of extras Michaels will fill cardboard boxes and sell them for $4.99 a box. The boxes are sealed and you never know what you are going to get until you open them. (Unless you are one of THOSE customers who go through the boxes to see if it is something you want and then leave the boxes all messed up when you decide you don’t want what’s inside, in which case the hard working Michaels employees have to go and clean up the area and make it all pretty again) – but I digress.
In the candles above, you can see that I got a deal on the Ginger Citrus tea lights that were regularly $6.99 but I only paid $2.00!
So, next time you visit your local Michaels pick up a candle or two to make your house smell good and then check out the Clearance section and get a deal on those cookie cutters or leftover holiday decorations!
Do you buy things on clearance? Make your own candles? Would you open a mystery box before leaving the store? I wanna know.

Some really great things there sometimes. Sometimes it’s just junk 🙂

I did a whole project on candle making when I was in high school, as a finale we made a bomb candle that “exploded” when lit… sure couldn’t do that one in school now!! I have shopped the clearance section at Michaels before and always come home with all kinds of cool things. I’m not sure I would be brave enough to buy a closed surprise box, unless I at least knew the category of things inside. But I do dislike customers who open and mess everything up on shelf displays, I know the clerks have to clean those messes up and it’s really inconsiderate.

Candle making would be an interesting class to take in high school. The surprise boxes are usually leftover decorations from the most recent holiday. We had some for both Christmas and Valentine’s day, but I saw that they weren’t put together very well in that one box might have 10 different stockings and one box would have 10 rolls of wrapping paper instead of spreading them out and making it more of a combination type.

OMG that wall looks a beauty! Seriously, how can you not buy everything there if you’re there every week?!

Fortunately I have great restraint! I only get there a couple of minutes before my shift and leave right after – most times.

I may have a bit of a candle addiction. And I love shopping the clearance section in stores!

My candle using goes in spurts. Sometimes I’ll have a candle burning all the time and other times I go months without lighting one. Maybe it depends on the scent.

Janet,
I love the ambiance of candles but DH says no to burning any candle in the house because of the electronics. So, I’m hoping whenever we move into our ‘dream house’ we’ll have a lovely screened in porch where I can burn candles while we enjoy a relaxing evening. I have a question about wax melts, can you reuse them and will the scent remain? I love visiting the clearance aisle! Years ago when the kids were small, DH would take me to my favorite plaza to have some ‘alone time’ where i browsed the clearance aisles of all the stores. I found some excellent bargains for off-season buying. I got some good stuff, too. These days, I don’t venture into retail stores other than for groceries and if it’s an emergency to get something that I would otherwise get online. Michael’s need to give you a bump in pay for all this FREE advertising. lol Thanks for visiting yesterday’s iPad Art Sketch ‘C’ post!

I’m going to start sending the link to my blog to Michaels corporate now that I no longer work there (just in case I would have been violating some rule). The wax melts keep their scent for quite a while, but depending on how often you use them, sometimes it fades – or you just get used to it and don’t notice it anymore. Yes to clearance browsing…you never know what you didn’t know you needed so badly!

I am obsessed with candles and my husband thinks I have FAR too many of the things, but I just think they all smell so wonderful! That wall of jar candles looks like my idea of heaven!

It really is so pretty and they are always having sales on them. I think once it was something like 3 candles for $5.

I swear I could smell those candles…I love scented candles but hubby will only allow the ones in the glass jars in the house (and he’s not nuts about those). Why? 31 years with the fire department. Sigh…

I could see the reluctance from a fireman. Fortunately in the store they have the tops on them or I think the combination of smells would be too much!

I miss scented candles–I don’t burn them in the motorhome because I’m terrified of fire. I always browse the candle section, though–just to smell. I would love a mystery box. I haven’t seen them, but I’m going to look out for them now. I love your theme! Dawn

Some scents I find overpowering but I do love a good vanilla or cinnamon. The mystery boxes are kinda fun. Thanks Dawn!

I always check out the clearances, and yes I can spend a lot of time looking it over. I used to make my own candles, so the supplies are great. I now have those melty things and a nice deal to melt them in (got these for Christmas). They do make the house smell good, in a short amount of time. 🙂

I made candles once when I was younger. There are so many interesting flavors!

Great one for Michaels. When I used to burn candles (before I turned all my ceilings black and was banned from doing that anymore), Michaels was always a great place to get good and affordable candles.

LOL made the ceiling black. I don’t burn them as often as I could, but we do usually have one going in the living room all the time.

Right? So many deals. The only thing is the coupons (and employee discount) don’t give you any extra off. Still, it is pretty cheap.
