Now in November…

So I’m starting November off with a plan to participate in the Ultimate Blog Challenge which really just means that I’m going to post every day in November. Do I even have that much to talk about? There is no theme although the organizer, Paul Taubman, sends out an email every day with some ideas. Today’s idea was to tell about the Ultimate Blog Challenge and why you are doing it.

I am doing the blog challenge for a couple reasons. One is that right now my transcription business is kind of slow so I have some extra time – not much but a little. Rather than just sit and play games (or clean house) I decided blogging would be a good idea. Also, I really am serious about getting more people to see my craft work and hopefully build my online presence in general. Plus, just as with the A to Z, by participating in the UBC, I will get a chance to meet some new bloggers since part of the process is to visit other people and leave comments.

Now that the explanation is out of the way, here are some cards I’ve been making for the shop for the upcoming holidays.

It is just the basic card right now because I was putting them together as I was watching the World Series and that means I have to bring things in the house from the studio since I can’t stream the game out there for some reason (probably Fox network blocking it). Now I have about 30 cards that I need to add a few details to and then post them. Stay tuned!

What are your plans for November? Do you send out Christmas cards? If you do send cards, do you prefer them blank inside so you can write your own message or would you rather have a sentiment inside? Just curious. See you tomorrow!

Oh My! Now it’s October…

Just got back from a short trip to visit the mom-in-law in Oregon. Truly blessed to have longevity at least in the women of our families. Hubby’s mom is 96 and mine is 98! Both have their medical issues but are still getting up every morning. Flying is always fun and it was nice to be able to spend a few days just sitting and doing pretty much nothing but talking and watching TV. Well, the watching TV part was kinda hard for me because you know I can’t just sit still for that but I had some magazines to skim through and a book to read. Still, I think mom enjoyed having the company. We don’t get up there very often.

We did just recently get a United Mileage Plus credit card (don’t ask me why we didn’t do it sooner) and that entitled us to a once a year pass into the United Club. That was pretty cool. Also, while it was pretty chilly in Oregon and it did rain a bit, back home there was a torrential downpour with streets flooding and cars getting stuck. Poor Benny didn’t even want to go out in the rain to go potty! Always fun to see the clouds from the plane.

Now it is time to get to work in the Etsy shop getting ready for the upcoming holiday boutiques. I did get this kind review from someone who bought 10 (!) cards recently.

I’m going to attempt the Ultimate Blog Challenge next month so hope you don’t mind hearing from me a little more often than I have been. I’m going to try drafting some posts in advance and see if that makes it easier. Halloween is coming. Are you ready? We haven’t gotten candy yet and I don’t decorate since the kids are all grown and I don’t like dusting – LOL.

Oh My! Now it’s October…

Sadly my SF Giants did not make it to the next level of the post season. No crying here because they did a remarkable job all year long and even though the last call of the game was clearly wrong, it was more than just one call that prevented their advancement. We will definitely be getting our membership in the 415 club again next year and hopefully the powers that be will sign all the good guys during the off season. How many days until March 31? I am watching this round of the playoffs because I’d love to see Boston beat the Astros (cheaters) and Atlanta beat the dreaded Dodgers. If the World Series turns out to be between Houston and LA, I’m probably gonna pass.

To fill the time, I’ve been working in the studio. I’ve finished a couple of projects that I was making for Thanksgiving.

The first is a fold out card and the second is called a “pocket” album. There is room in both for pictures and journaling. They’d make great gifts! Both are available in my Etsy shop. I’m making another one for Thanksgiving and then I’ll start working on Christmas.

I also finished my third sketchbook and it is on its way to the Brooklyn Art Library as part of The Sketchbook Project. This one is titled “Just a Thought” and the theme was “Thought Box.”

It was fun putting this together. I used a bunch of my favorite “thoughts” and tried to match the pictures to them. You can see the other two books I have in the library here and here. Of course if you live in New York or nearby, you could always go and see them in person – LOL. It’s kind of fun to say I have books in the Brooklyn Art Library but in reality, anybody can do it. In fact, there will probably be a new volume coming out soon since Volume 18 is due back in November. Even if you don’t want to do a sketchbook yourself, there are tons of interesting ones to look at and the library could use the love as it is a non-profit organization and donations are always welcome. I am not sure when this one will be online to view but you can be sure I’ll let you know when it is!

Unfortunately we had to miss the final concert we had scheduled for this year. It was to be Chris Isaak at the Mountain Winery but the hubby got his Covid booster a few days before and had a mild reaction with a headache and body aches. It was also supposed to rain and the venue is outside so we decided to stay home. He would have gone with me if I wanted but there was no way I was going to allow that. We both would have had a miserable time.

Next on the agenda is a quick trip to Oregon to see mom-in-law and then I’ll be getting ready for a scrapbook weekend (OMG I can’t wait for that!) and two holiday boutiques have in November. What’s coming up for you? Thoughts on baseball playoffs? Love to hear from you.

Oh My! Now It’s October…

I just can’t make this time move slower, can I? October is here and I’m not getting any closer to my goals it seems. Anybody else having that problem? Maybe it’s because our Giants are in the playoffs so I’m still consumed with baseball. I don’t usually follow other teams much but now I am watching all the postseason games to see who we might face next. It is nerve wracking sometimes. We made it to the game before they clinched the West. Look at all the boats out in McCovey Cove waiting for a home run to come. Yes we do have a woman coach on our team, the first in MLB!

Our first job is to put a lid on the dreaded Dodger’s season! Not going to be easy but I have faith in my guys. Thanks to Linda for the #SoCS prompt of “lid.” Have a great weekend all.

Surely it’s not September

Near as I can tell it’s actually closer to October already! I’ve been busy this month with concerts and baseball games! It is so much fun being able to get out and about without too much worry since hubby and I are both fully vaccinated AND the events we’ve been going to are either outside and/or have proof of vaccination requirements. Last post I wrote about The Fab Four and Chicago. This time we went to the San Jose Civic, a new favorite of ours, and saw John Waite and Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. Great show and as you can see, since it was an indoor event masks were worn. We had wonderful seats in the 4th row and there were no picture taking restrictions other than the usual no flash. I have to say that in all the places we’ve been to so far the entry process has been smooth and painless.

We also got memberships to the new 415 Club at Oracle Park where our Giants play. This section is above the visiting bullpen (great for heckling!) and is named because the area code in San Francisco is 415 but also the seats are 415 feet from home plate. With our memberships (we got 2) we each got 10 vouchers for games. So far we’ve been to a total of 3 games with 3 more to go. We can use as many vouchers per game as we want so the kids and a couple of friends have come with us. We won’t be able to use all the vouchers before the end of the season (the program didn’t start when the season began) but we will get to have advance presale for playoff and World Series tickets because of the membership so that’s exciting. We got some pretty cool swag too. I’m wearing the 415 hat and on the Friday game we went to they gave us light up wristbands. You have to show your wristband to get into the members only section! We definitely will get the membership again next year. Totally worth the price.

We are so proud of our boys in Orange and Black. They are doing so well this year! Such exciting games with extra innings and come from behind wins. First to 100 wins! Now if we can just keep the dreaded Dodgers at bay and win the Division Title!

Speaking of orange and black, it is almost time for Halloween! I’ve been crafting some new mini-albums and cards for the Etsy shop. One of them has sold already! Fastest turnaround I think has ever happened. I’m working on a Thanksgiving one now. I have 2 holiday boutiques coming up in November so I better get cracking in the studio.

That’s my catch up. What have you been up to? The end of the year doesn’t seem so far!

Thanks to Linda for the #SoCS prompt of Near/Far.

Surely it’s not September…

What happened to August? I can’t believe I only managed two posts the whole month. I really haven’t been that busy, have I? Let’s take a look and see…

On the 20th of August we went to our first concert at the Mountain Winery since 2019! This was the Fab Four, the Beatles tribute band. They were good, but we’ve seen them several times now so I don’t think we’ll see them again. Mostly it just felt so good to get out and do some dancing and singing! The Winery is taking Covid precautions and you have to show proof of vaccination or (for this show anyway) a negative test within 72 hours. Beginning in October it is a vaccination only venue. It was a very smooth entry process and I have no problem with it.

We also continued to binge watch The Sopranos and got to see our son win the softball championship. Unfortunately things took a turn for the worse and we had a leak under the house which required new pipes throughout. We could have just replaced the pipes that were actually leaking but we figured that if we did it all now, we wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore. The company was great to work with and although it took a day or two longer than we hoped, we didn’t lose the use of the bathroom so we didn’t have to leave the house. I never thought I’d be so happy to do the dishes and laundry!

September started out much nicer though. Last night we saw Chicago from the 4th row at the Winery. They were much better this year than the last time we saw them, which was about 2006. They have a new lead singer who, while he is no Peter Cetera, does a much better job than the guy they had before. We have 2 more concerts this month, Pat Benatar and then Chris Isaak. Good thing we had gotten the tickets before the pipe problem! We also have tickets to see some Giants games. They are playing so well this year!

This morning I woke up early enough to see this:

So I’m thinking September is going to be a good month. What about you guys?

…And now it’s August…

Very honored to have been nominated not once but twice for the Ideal Inspiration Blogger Award. I must really be inspiring! I will respond to both now.

The first was from A to Z coordinator J. Lenni Dorner. I have to continually send my appreciation to him, not only for his wonderful work with the A to Z each April but also, and maybe more importantly at least to me, is for his comment on one of my posts where I was ranting about the size of toilet paper rolls. He directed me to the Charmin company who offers a toilet roll extender that makes it easier to use these huge rolls. Now instead of being frustrated when I have to change the TP, it is a breeze. Thanks for making my life easier, J. Lenni. Now to answer his five questions (paraphrased to save time and typing):

  • How seriously are you taking the pandemic? On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 means you have done nothing and don’t even really believe in it and 10 means you’ve masked, vaccinated and reached out to your political leaders… — Absolutely a 10, except I haven’t reached out to political leaders. I mask, I’ve been vaccinated and definitely take all the precautions. The virus is real.
  • What are your thoughts, etc. about the Kindle Vella? — I know nothing about it so have no opinion. I don’t use a Kindle so if this is a new version, it wouldn’t appeal to me.
  • In the United States voting rights are changing. Do you think it should be harder or easier to vote? — I believe very strongly that every adult of sound mind should be allowed to vote and that all the votes need to be counted. I am praying that the two measures now in congress can get passed. While I am not always on the winning side, I at least want to know that no one is allowed to discount my vote because they don’t like me or the outcome.
  • Who do I think should host “Jeopardy” now that Alex Trebek has passed? — I did not regularly watch the show (I rarely watch TV at all) and so I have no opinion on this.
  • If you had 200 Billion dollars what would you do with the money and would one of the things be sending yourself into space? — If I had that much money, I would share it with the less fortunate for sure. You could seriously change someone’s life with money like that. I’d probably open a scrapbook shop, hire a cleaning service to clean the house, make sure the kids were taken care of. Traveling to space does not interest me at this time. I reserve the right to change my mind about that if something exciting happens out there or if it is the only way I could continue to live.

The second nomination was from Tamara Gerber at Part-Time Working Hockey Mom. Tamara is one of the bloggers I found during the A to Z a few years ago when she was writing about crime. It was a very interesting subject, although she says she was disappointed in its reception. Tamara lives in Switzerland and I love learning more about that country. Her questions are:

  • If you were an animal, what would you be? — I’m stuck between a koala and an owl.
  • In what way has this pandemic changed your view of the world? — I think it is the realization of the extreme differences between people. I mean, I always knew that there were differences of opinion and that countries do things differently but I don’t know if I really felt the extremism. It makes me a little nervous at times.
  • Have you ever lived abroad? If not, would you consider it? — Considering the fact that I wouldn’t even move across the Bay so my husband wouldn’t have to commute over the bridge, I really don’t think living abroad is in my future. LOL. That said, I might like to make an extended visit to Australia or Italy or even London.
  • What are your personal contributions toward reducing your carbon footprint? — Well, of course I probably could do more but in general, I turn off lights when not in the room, I batch my errands so I either park in one spot and walk to several places or do many errands in one day and then don’t drive again for a couple days. We recycle everything we can.
  • If I were to visit you in your town or city, what adventures would we experience there? — This is easy. See my A to Z posts from this year’s challenge where I took you through San Francisco!

I hesitate to nominate people for awards. I don’t want to put any pressure and I know some folks don’t participate in the practice so I will just ask my five questions and if you are so inclined, please answer and link back here so we can read them!

  1. If you were a color, what color and why?
  2. Words of advice I will never forget are…?
  3. In the future I want to be remembered for…?
  4. Alternatively, ever wonder what your role in history would have been? Think of the most historical events in the last 100 years and put yourself there.
  5. Have I truly inspired you? At least, have I made you smile?

Thanks again J. Lenni and Tamara for the nomination. It has been fun answering your questions!

…And now it’s August…

When last I posted it was about a family emergency that was going to keep my husband away for five weeks. Fortunately, it did not last that long and he was back in 2-1/2. Now we have other issues to deal with but they are not life-threatening so that’s good.

In the meantime, I decided to participate in both the August Break prompts from Susannah Conway and the Tell It course from Liz Lamoreux. I’ve participated with these lovely ladies several times in the past and it is always such fun. It’s not too late to join in.

Here are a couple of my responses to the prompts:

And for the Tell It Course:

I love using art journaling to explore. So often I make things just to sell them but every once in a while I like trying out new techniques and playing with papers and words.

And speaking of the Etsy Shop, they have started a new feature called “Star Seller” and I am just a wee bit short of making it.

I need two more orders by the end of the month to qualify. That’s kind of exciting. What about you? How is your August going? Thanks to lovely Linda for her #SoCS prompt of “wee.”

July Jumped Right In…

…with a family emergency that means my husband will be out of town for five weeks. How will I last that long without him you ask? Well, let me put it this way. I love my husband very much but we have been together 24/7 (he’s retired, I work from home) for the last 8 years. You know that old saying, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder?” It applies here. LOL

I have big plans for the available time. I have many projects around the house I would like to get done and some serious time in the studio is calling me. It is time for me to look back on the vision cards I made for this year to pick the areas that need tending to the most.

In order from top to bottom, left to right:

Business of Magic is the title I used for my craft business this year. I actually have been doing pretty well there and even was able to do a pop up craft show in June. I have made at least one or two sales every month and that is kind of like magic. I just got a notice to sign up for one of the holiday boutiques in November so it looks like things are flowing in this category. I did some rearranging and reorganizing in the studio too, which makes working in it much easier. Also made myself some new business cards with a new logo. What do you think?

Sharing is the title I used for connecting with family and friends. Of course the pandemic limited that a bit but we have had dinner with friends and made plans to go to a couple concerts in September with others so we’re getting there. I also did some Zoom and FaceTime interactions so I’m counting that too and we had a great 4th of July gathering.

Prosperity is the category title for our financial health. It is a struggle because my transcription business is quite hit and miss but fortunately I’ve been able to move some money around and we are doing okay. Of course winning the lottery would help!

I have had a lot of action in the Experience category. All my excursions through San Francisco for the A to Z really helped there.

Self-Care is one of the areas that needs some work this next six months. I have stalled in the weight loss department but haven’t given up hope to get going again. I intend to use the time while hubby is away to get more serious with my healthy eating and to increase the activity by dancing in the living room since he won’t be there watching TV. I also started listening to meditation while I walk Benny in the morning. It helps me focus on the day.

Nest is another area that I will be concentrating on. I have made a goal to go room by room listing all the things I want to attend to. I also have plans for the outside like a small fence in the front yard so I can let Benny get out there and not have to worry that he’s going to chase a passing motorcycle or run across the street to visit another dog walking by. I still haven’t gotten my fire pit yet either!

So, how has your year been so far. Did you make a list of goals you wanted to accomplish? How are you doing with them? You still have time to tackle something!

July Jumped right in…

With a Bang! We had our usual 4th of July get together with friends in front of our house. My husband volunteers at the local fireworks booth every year and he gets free fireworks to take home. Our city is one of only 2 in the surrounding area that allows the “Safe and Sane” fireworks to be used in front of your own house. We had a pretty good show if I do say so myself.

And then there were the “illegals” which seemed to be much more prevalent this year, even though there is a fine of $1000 if you are caught.

It almost reminded me of the block parties we used to have when I was growing up. All the neighbors would come to our house and shoot their fireworks off in the street and then we’d watch the sponsored fireworks go off up on the hill. When we were first married my husband promised to show me fireworks every year and he hasn’t disappointed in the last 36 years, including the time we climbed out the bathroom window of the apartment we were living in and sat on the roof to watch the city show. Ah, sweet memories. Hope you all had a good 4th too! Let’s see what the rest of July can bring.
