A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Up Where We Belong

Very short post today because I only have one set of pictures that were taken a long time ago.

“U” is for “Up Where We Belong” sung by Joe Cocker.  Joe was the opening act for Tom Petty the first time we saw him in 2010.  Ten years ago and sadly both of them have passed away.  Makes these pictures, terrible as they are, even more meaningful.

It was a really good show.  Joe was a little less “twitchie” and dressed very nicely as opposed to the way he was in his earlier years but he didn’t disappoint.

That’s it for “U.”  I’ll have a little better story for you tomorrow with “V.”  See you then.

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Toto

Toto was the first band we saw at the Mountain Winery!  We went to see them and Three Dog Night, who were actually the headliners, in June 2007.  My best friend, Margie, and her husband met us there and we had drinks and sandwiches before we went in.  The venue looked very different than it does now and we had seats that were pretty far back but it was still a great show.  I didn’t realize all the songs that Three Dog Night actually had.  We didn’t take any pictures that night but I found some promo stuff online and used that to make the layouts for the album.

We next saw Toto in 2017 when they opened at the Winery for Pat Benatar.  This show was even better than the first one.  We had MUCH closer seats this time, in the front section, five rows back.  Of course I took lots of pictures.
For this set I chose a collection called “Main Street” from Quick Quotes Scrapbooking.  It was a pack I got at one of the Scrapbook Expos I’ve been to.  I love it.

Here’s what I came up with for the first page.  I’m not thrilled with my printing of the date and I may try and change that but I didn’t have number stickers that matched.

Took a chance again and stamped the sentiment after I had put all the pictures down on this sheet.  Thank goodness it came out okay.

Naturally I got some really good pictures but sadly, I don’t have time to scrap them all right now so here are just a few.

Steve Lukather is a terrific guitarist and he was also very engaging with the crowd.  He even caught my husband playing his air guitar along with him and gave him a nod.  That interaction made this show special for my hubby so when I got an email about the book “The Gospel According To Luke” and saw that it was a signed edition, I had to get it for him for Christmas a couple of years ago.  It looks pretty interesting so I am going to read it too.

Here’s “Africa” as we saw it.

“T” is done!  U is already prepped.  V may be an easy one.  I’m crossing my fingers for the rest! Thank goodness for Sunday!

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Santana

San Francisco Fest in September 2016 was supposed to be like the old Day on the Green concerts they used to do in Oakland back when Bill Graham was alive.  It was almost an all day affair, starting at three in the afternoon.  Tower of Power opened, followed by the Doobie Brothers, then by Steve Miller, Santana next and finally Journey.  I suppose I could use San Francisco Fest as my “S” but I’m going to stick to just Santana.

I used a set of papers called Happy Days from Paper Wishes.
I thought the bright chevron paper really matched the Santana picture.

This collection has the free download tags and embellishments and also a sheet of 3-D labels.

I put the first two pages together.  The Happy Day emblem is from the 3-D cutouts.

Carlos Santana’s wife is one of the drummers and she really got into it.  There was an exhausting drum solo (looked exhausting for her anyway and actually I thought it went on just a little too long).  I had a red guitar which kind of matches Carlos’.

I have a lot of extras to go with this show.  There was a pamphlet that they gave out telling the times of the shows and a history of the Day on the Green Festivals

I even have a review from the paper the next day and some confetti that they shot out at the end of the show.

Here’s the setlist:

Here is Maria Maria:

There’s “S.”  One week left to go!  Thanks for coming along with me!

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Richie

Lionel Richie has been one of my favorites for a long time.  As he says in his act, he’s got a song for just about every emotion you can have.  I’ve listened to him when I was happy and when I was sad.  I’ve danced to his songs and cried to his songs.  This is from the time we saw him in 2013.  We saw him again in 2017 and Mariah Carey was his opening act.  I wasn’t impressed with her, but Lionel was great again.

For the 2013 pictures I went with a set of papers called “Rugged” from Creative Memories with a couple of extras thrown in.  I liked the rough edges and the colors went well with the pictures.

Driving in to the SAP Center we saw the moon.  You know how I am about that thing!  We had seats 10 rows back from the stage.  Almost the closest we’ve ever had at that venue.  We got some pretty decent chicken strips to share for dinner before the show.  Also, if you look closely you can see the blue gum in my mouth.  I should at least remember to chew white mint if I’m gonna open my mouth with that smile!

I used the Rose Window stencil again.
I used some of the leftover pieces to fill in the blanks.

I’m not sure if I’m finished with this page for good but it came out okay so far.

Here’s the set list.  26 songs and he could have gone on longer!  He mixed in some Commodore songs with his own.

How about some “Dancing on the Ceiling?”

Well that’s the letter “R.”  Do you like Lionel?  Have a favorite song?  Mine is “Lady” which he actually sang with the Commodores.  Hopefully I’ll see you tomorrow!

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Queen

We are 3/4 of the way through the A to Z Challenge.Ā  I’m hanging on by a thread…or in my case a glue stick.Ā  “Q” is for Queen and I’m sorry I didn’t get to see them when Freddie Mercury was around but I have seen them twice with Adam Lambert and both shows were excellent.

The first time was in 2017 and then we saw them again last year during the big “Bohemian Rhapsody” explosion.Ā  For the 2017 pictures I chose this paper from Paper Wishes called Paper Painting.Ā  I love the rich colors in these paper collections.Ā  This set even has some tags and embellishments to match.Ā  Bonus, on the Paper Wishes site they give them away as a free download!Ā  Very nice way to get some cool stash.

There’s no way I’m going to be able to scrap all these pictures in time.Ā  The stack is about 1 inch thick!
I found this crown on my Slice Machine design card called “Just Chillin’ Teen.”
I had some old gold foil paper and I think it worked great.Ā  This was a bit of gift wrap paper from the old days when the kids had to sell wrapping paper as a fund raiser.Ā  They used to give a sample swatch of all the different kinds you could buy and I kept them all these years to use in crafting.Ā  That paper is probably 25 years old!
I wanted gold numbers to mark the date but didn’t have them so I used some silver sparkly ones and colored over them with gold marker.Ā  Pleased with that result.
Here’s page one.Ā  I popped some of the flowers from the freebie sheet on foam dots and added a jewel in between the numbers.
And page two.Ā  We stopped at our favorite restaurant, Louisiana Bistro, before the show.Ā  James (the owner) was always very friendly and let me take his picture this time.Ā  Sadly, they closed down shortly after that.Ā  We really miss it!Ā  There was a guy sitting near us who worked with a company called “Date Knight.”Ā  They plan dates for you.Ā  Don’t know if they are still around either but how fitting that it was date (k)night and a Queen concert!
Here’s the setlist from that night.Ā  It was a great show.

People may say that because Freddie Mercury has passed and John Deacon no longer tours that is is a cover band but that offends Brian May and Roger Taylor and is definitely not the case as far as I’m concerned.Ā  Listen to Another One Bites the Dust from that night.

True, Adam Lambert is no Freddie Mercury and he straight up says as much but the joint was still rocking.Ā  That’s “Q” for you.Ā  No quitting here!

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Petty

“P” is for Petty, Tom Petty.  I am not sure why but of all of the musicians we have lost in the last few years, his death really hit me.  I cried, which is something I hardly ever do.  I was so sorry that I hadn’t gone to the concerts he did in our area right before he passed.  I thought they were too far away and wasn’t familiar with the venue but in retrospect, I should have made the effort.  He died a month and a half later.  At least we did get to see him twice.

The first time was at Oracle Arena in 2010.  Our eldest daughter came with us.  I was amazed at how many trucks it took to bring all the equipment in.

We had reasonably good seats, although they were off to the side of the stage a bit.  I even joined his fan club so I could get early access and bought a sweatshirt.

I made these layouts a while ago but I still remember some of the things I did.  The musical stamp on this page is a smaller version of the one I used with Daughtry.

The paper is from a collection from Paper Wishes called Hopscotch.

I used the “Say Cheese” stencil that I used with the Frampton pictures.

I used the “Pearls” stencil for this one.

I had a stamp that looked like the circles on the paper so I stamped it in the corners and added some enamel dots.

Here’s the setlist from that show and also a review that was in the paper.  I really love the picture of Tom with his arms outstretched and his back to the crowd.

He was promoting his then new album, Mojo, and some of the songs were really good.  I’m glad he did his standard hits too though.  I “made” this paper myself, using watercolor crayons.  I think it matches pretty well, don’t you?

This is “Running Down a Dream” from the second time we saw him, in San Jose in 2014.  My goal had been to scrapbook those pictures for this post but that’s not happening.

I’m hoping to use tomorrow to get ahead a bit on the rest of the alphabet.  Oh who am I kidding?  10 days left of the A to Z Challenge.  Are we having fun yet?

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – One More Night

I’m really stretching it here using “One More Night” by Phil Collins for my “O.”  Phil is one of our favorite performers and although he has had some pretty big health issues, I was excited to see that he was touring.  In looking at some of the clips from his tour, I saw that he sat for the entire show and sang from his seat.  My husband was thinking that it would be a tame show and decided he didn’t want to go so our son, Jeff, went with me instead.  We had a blast.

I went with this pretty paper collection.

Here’s the first page.  Before the show they were flashing pictures of Phil from his younger days.  He really has been around a long time, both with Genesis (my “G” in 2017), and solo.  My son was indulgent of his mom and took the concert selfie with me.

Here are a few of the pictures I’m working with.  I’m excited to scrap the ones of Phil and his son, who is the drummer for the band now.  How cool is that!

Son, Nick, on the drums.

One of the few times he stood during the show.

He definitely has aged but he can still belt it out, even sitting!

Here’s the setlist from that show.  If you look closely, “One More Night” was not even on the list but given that his show was the “Not Dead Yet” tour, I think he wants one more night!

In fact, he did do another tour which we didn’t see but it was called the “Still Not Dead Yet” tour – lol.  It was last year at the new Chase Center they built in San Francisco and from what I hear it was another great show.  Even more interesting, there was talk before the coronavirus hit that Phil was going to get back together with Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks and do some Genesis shows in Europe.  I’m sure those plans have been changed now and Peter Gabriel was not mentioned to be with them, a fact that disappoints my husband.  If they come around again, I may have to go with my son!

Here’s a bit of “You’ll Be In My Heart” from that night.

And just in case you’re a Phil Collins fan, I would recommend his book, also titled “Not Dead Yet.”
Whew.  Not as detailed and definitely not complete but man I thought I was going to have to skip some and that would have made me sad.  We are on to the letter “P” tomorrow and then we have a day to recoup.  I just may make it after all!

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Nickelback

“N” is for Nickelback.  Nickelback was the headliner when we saw Daughtry my letter “D” band.  I’ve used the same set of papers but will definitely have to add some more because I have A LOT of pictures.  I picked this DIY Shop set that I got from Michaels because it has a grungy look and that’s how I think of Nickelback.

Here’s what I came up with for the first page.  It was called the “Feed the Machine” tour and the drums were set up to look like a huge machine.

Here’s the setlist from that show.  I really like several of their songs more than I thought, although some are a little more suggestive than I usually go for.  “When We Stand Together” is a great one for these times.

Here are a couple of the pictures I have.  I got some really good shots so this is going to be a several pager!

I did catch a video of “Burn It To the Ground.”  It was their finale and they held nothing back.  The crowd was electric.  Enjoy.

Again, once I get the actual pages put together I’ll do a follow up post.  For now I’m calling this one done and I can move on to “O.”  Coming along?

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Miller

As I thought, I’ve hit a snag.  The good news is I have transcription work to do which means income.  The bad news is I have transcription work to do which means less playtime.  Fortunately I had drafted all the letters of the alphabet and some even have scrapbook pages that were done in the past so I will be able to share something for every day, it may not be the completed layouts.  I’m okay with that.

For the letter “M” I’m using Steve Miller, who was another one of those happy surprises.  We’ve seen him twice now and both times even though he wasn’t the headliner, his performance was better than theirs (note:  It was Journey both times, not with Steve Perry though).

The first time we saw Steve Miller he was the middle act between Tower of Power and Journey.  I was only going to scrapbook the pictures from his set but since I’m getting behind anyway, I may just wait until I have time to do the whole show.  In any case, I chose this set of papers called Songbird from Paper Wishes.  I know I will have to add some papers from my other stash because there won’t be enough to do it all but I’m pretty sure I can find some that will coordinate.

We had friends with us again this time and…it was at Shoreline Amphitheater.  See, I told you we went to other venues!  I liked this to use as the title page.

I picked the Water Lily Stencil for this group of pictures.

I added an outline around the circle with some Nuvo pearl.

I still have to do something else to it though because I’m not sure I like it like this.
Neal Schon came out and did a song with Steve Miller.  I’ll probably put the set list on this page because there are fewer pictures.

On this one I’ll probably use another stencil to fit them all in.  I like this paper because there are birds flying all around, even though they are not eagles.  Get it?  “Fly Like an Eagle?”

Once I actually get the scrapbook pages done I’ll post an update because I’m sure you all want to see how they come out!  Hope everything is going well for you all in this crazy Covid time.  Stay safe out there.  Take a peek at some of the other A to Zers if you get a chance.  Don’t hate me because I can’t keep up completely!

A to Z Challenge – 2020 – Lynyrd Skynyrd

“L” is for Lynyrd Skynyrd.  This is a band that I really didn’t pay much attention to when I was younger but actually like a lot of their songs.  We’ve seen them twice, both at the Mountain Winery – yes, we do go to other venues!  I scrapbooked the first time from July 2008 a while ago.  It was actually one of the first few shows we went to.

We even had old-fashioned tickets!

Believe it or not these are pictures from my phone which was a really old flip style!

The “Welcome to the Winery” pamphlet said no cameras permitted but now I realize they mean no “professional” cameras and no flash.  Back then I still followed the rules.

Forward to October 6, 2012 for our second show.  We were farther back and to the side of the stage a bit but the pictures are a little better.  The paper is another collection that I’ve had forever.  I think it is from Creative Memories.
I used chalk around the edges of the title to make it stand out a bit.

They had a pretty good setlist, performing most of their hits, 16 songs.

I had this punch that fit perfectly around a couple of the smaller pictures.

I made it look like a flower on the paper.

I put black and blue Stickles borders around them.

I like the way the page turned out.  I added the butterfly over the one printed on the page and popped it up with some foam dots to make it 3-D.

There are only three pages to this layout but I’m okay with that too.  Not every concert is going to have a million pictures or pages.

The pictures may not be so great but here is Free Bird as we saw it.

Okay, really now, this is as far as I have gotten with new scrapbooking.  I do have some groups that I’ve made pages for but for the rest of the alphabet it’s going to be a little hit and miss.  I’ve gotten some typing work in, which is a great thing financially so that has to come first!
