August Break – 2019 – Hope and Song Lyric Sunday

The prompt for today’s #Augustbreak2019 is “hope.”  The prompt for #SLS is “Songs with somebody famous in it.”

I’ve chosen the song “I Knew You When” by Bob Seger.  While the lyrics don’t specifically mention his name, Mr. Seger has said it is his tribute to the late Glenn Frey who was a good friend of his.  The lyrics include the word Hope.

I Knew You When
In the ancient middle fifties, the closin’ sixties roar
I was caught up in your passion,
I could only beg for more
And if I had a dollar bill I’d give it to you then
So I could tell the whole wide world
One day I knew you when
With your dangerous charisma
Your thundering attack
You charged the very air I breathe,
And kept me coming back
You helped me through my darkest hours,
You always were my friend
You gave me hope to carry on
Because I knew you when
I knew you when the mountain tops were right beneath your feet
When artistry and freedom were complete
Before you were an icon, before they all too came
You could say I knew you when
We all sit here with our memories, of a glorious long ago
When our heroes seemed immortal, were they really so
It’s a question for a wiser man
I will not ask again
I will only say I’m grateful,
For the time I knew you when
I knew you when (I knew you when)
Oh, I knew you when
I knew you when (I knew you when)
Yeah I knew you when
I knew you when (I knew you when)
Yeah I knew you when

In fact, the whole album is dedicated to Glenn.  There is a slight reference to #45 in the song “Busload of Faith” where he sings, “You can’t depend on the president, unless there’s real estate you want to buy.”  Funny, but sad at the same time.

I had hoped that we could see Bob Seger one more time before he retires but sadly his visit in our area coincides with the golf tournament my husband participates in every September and it just won’t work out.  I’ll just have to remember the other times we saw him.

The video:

Hope is a hard thing to take a picture of but every time I look at the full moon I think about my dreams for the future and hope that the Universe is listening.

Full moon coming again next week – get ready to share your hopes!

August Break – 2019 – Day 10 My Outfit – #SoCS – Where

Where I am most of the time is working from home so my outfit is my PJs and I’m pretty sure I don’t want that out there in the Internet for all to see.  Here is one of my latest outfits that I can share:

My dog walking outfit, fanny pack with treats, leash with poop bags and a sparkly cap because that’s how I roll.

Since I’ve been walking Benny twice a day it really makes me mad that some pet owners do not clean up after their animal children.  So many times I see poop just laying there and of course Benny needs to smell it all.  The ones that are off the side in the dirt are bad enough but occasionally I’ll see some droppings just in the middle of the sidewalk.  What the heck?  If you can’t be responsible for your pet’s mess, don’t have one!  No consideration for other people.  And that’s my rant for the day.

August Break – 2019 – Day 9 – Ground

Since I just took a picture of the ground yesterday for curves, I needed to do something different for today’s prompt.  Here’s my take on it:

Gotta have my coffee in the morning!  I don’t like it too strong so the Starbucks Veranda blend is one of my favorites.  Sometimes I can get it on sale at either Safeway or Target and when that happens I make sure to stock up.  It doesn’t last long enough to get stale around this house!
Also, while I’m here, I thought I’d give you a peek at some of the new cards I have going up in my Etsy shop today.  I’ve been watching the Giants on TV in the studio and getting my craft on at the same time.

Birthday, Anniversary, New Baby, Sympathy…even some early Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Check them out on the Etsy site.

August Break – 2019 – Day 8 – Curves

Interesting that I have walked down this street (my own block) almost twice a day for the past four months when I take Benny for his daily constitutional and never noticed the curved bricks in this driveway until today when I was thinking about the August Break prompt of “curved.”

I have seen these succulents and love the way they look too.  I think if we ever get around to doing anything with our yard I want some.

Do you notice that you pay more attention to your surroundings when you are looking for something specific?  Or are you one like my husband who notices everything?

August Break – 2019 – Day 7 – Human

This is a difficult one.  I didn’t just want to take a selfie since I do that all the time so it took me a while to come up with something.  Then I remembered that my girls and I went to the Backstreet Boys concert on Sunday and it was for their new album, DNA.  That makes me think of humans so here you go:

They may be getting older and they may not do as many dance moves as they used to but even this 64 year old had a good time listening to these guys.

They had a really cool stage set up and at times were standing above us all on top of their projector set up.

Tons of cool backgrounds like this one which of course appeals to me a lot.

They did quite a few songs, some from the new album but most from the old ones and everyone was singing along.

One of my favorites is called No Place.  It is a song about how they have been around the world and seen a lot of things but there is “no place like you” and it shows pictures of them and their families.  They are all married with children now and it was really cute to see their little kids.

They took their bow after the main set and then drove the crowd wild coming back out with Sharks jerseys on.

We may all have different DNA but we can all come together to sing and dance!

I know these three humans had a great time!
Hope you are enjoying my takes on the #Augustbreak2019 prompts.  Not too late to hop on board if you want!  We’ve got some good ones coming up.

August Break – 2019 – Day 6 Currently Reading

This is one of my most favorite prompts because I end up adding so many books to my “want to read” list.  I don’t know about you but I can’t read more than one book at a time and generally I prefer the actual book to a Kindle or Nook version.  However, one of my blogging friends is an author who has been churning out mysteries quite rapidly and if I bought the actual book each time I’d be broke!

James J. Cudney is the author of whom I speak and right now I am reading the fourth book in his Braxton Campus Mystery series, Mistaken Identity Crisis on my iPad.

All the mysteries are set around Braxton College and Kellan, the sleuth, has his hands busy not only with solving the crimes but also with his young daughter and the rest of his family.  The characters in the series are quirky and fun.  I’ve yet to be able to figure out “who done it” before the end of the book.

Jay has written two other books, not in the series, his first novel, Watching Glass Shatter is a great book about a family of five brothers whose father dies suddenly and leaves his wife a cryptic message about one of the boys.  Jay has said there will be some sort of sequel or follow up to this book as well and I’m looking forward to that.

The other book, Father Figure, is also about a family intrigue but this time is is girls, born decades apart, who don’t know that they share a parallel history.

I’d highly recommend any and all of these books if you are looking for a new source.

So far so good with keeping up with August Break.  We have no big plans for the month so I should have time to keep going.  Still time to join in!

August Break – 2019 – Day 4 Buttons

Today’s prompt is buttons.  I think I have a few:

Every color of the rainbow and then some.

I may start to weed some of these out and make grab bags for the Etsy site.  Anybody need some buttons?
I also have buttons from the years of Scrapbook Expo adventures.  Every time you go and if you take a class, you get a button.

Some people wear theirs on the lanyard each year but I just keep mine in the studio.

How about you?  Got buttons?

August Break – 2019 – Song Lyric Sunday Edition

You are going to get two posts from me today because I can’t connect the prompts from Song Lyric Sunday and August Break.  Hope you don’t mind.

First up is Song Lyric Sunday as curated by Jim Adams.  I decided to go with a pretty old show, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.  It was on from 1969 to 1972 and was a cute show about a young boy, Brandon Cruz, trying to find a wife for his widowed dad, Bill Bixby.  There were a lot of up and coming actors on the show and it was a feel good kind of program.  Each episode started with a conversation like this:

The song was written by Harry Nilsson and while I’m not a big fan of his, the song fits perfectly.

The lyrics are short:

Best Friend
People let me tell you ’bout my best friend,
He’s a warm hearted person who’ll love me till the end.
People let me tell you bout my best friend,
He’s a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.
People let me tell you ’bout him he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talkin’ man to man or whether we’re talking son to son.
‘Cause he’s my best friend.
Yes he’s my best friend.

Bill Bixby went on to play David Banner (the Hulk) and sadly died at age 59 from prostate cancer.  He also had a brief show, The Magician, and was on My Favorite Martian with the late Ray Walston.  Personally, I always thought Mr. Bixby was a handsome guy so I enjoyed watching him on all the shows.

And there’s your #SLS.  Make sure to pop over and see the other participants in today’s song fest.

August Break – 2019 – Day 2 Pink

Our August Break continues with Pink as the prompt.  Took my mom (who is recovering nicely from her compression fracture thank goodness) to the Dollar Tree today.  She buys some of her groceries and other household things there since she is on a tight budget.  I’ve learned not to argue with her about what she buys since she is the one who is using and paying for them.

Anyway, I knew the prompt for today was pink so I was keeping my eyes open for something unusual to capture.  Here’s what I found near the checkout counter:

A pink unicorn and fluffy pink bear pen.

Here’s a pink from a few years ago as a bonus.  We were in Vegas and who pulled up along side us but “Elvis” in his pink Cadillac.  He said, “Hey” when we called his name.  Fun stuff.  Hope to get back there one of these days.

How about you?  Got some pink to show?
