April 2017 – #Atozchallenge – Eventually E

E is for Sir Elton John.  We were able to see him when he was doing the Face to Face Tour with Billy Joel.  Our original tickets were for November of 2009 but Elton John got sick and they had to cancel our part of the tour.  Fortunately they rescheduled the show so we saw them in February 2010.

This was an interesting show in which both performers were on stage to start the show, then Billy Joel left and Elton did a solo spot.  He played hit after hit, but with very little interaction with the crowd.

The big screen that they used was more like a series of lights so the pictures did not come out crisp and clear but that night it was impressive.

Without a significant break, Billy Joel then came out and did a set of his tunes.  He was more talkative and told some stories about the songs and joked about how long he’s been singing.

I wanted to add a music note to one of the pictures so I used the MISTI (Most Incredible Stamping Tool Invented) to help me get the placement right on the picture.

There are several versions of this handy tool out now but it really does make it easier to do stamping since you can stamp in the same spot more than once if it doesn’t come out as dark as you would like or if you want to stamp multiple things the same way such as invitations or Christmas cards.

Finally, Elton John came back out and the two of them did the finale together.  Piano Man was a perfect choice to end the concert with.  For this layout I used the overlays again.  They come with a plain white background but I changed the paper to a blue instead.   I think the piano keys work really well.

Rather than just focus on the performers, I tried to get the song images, like the ballerina in “Tiny Dancer,” and the Yellow Brick Road.  Funnily, when Billy Joel sang “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and the verse came up about “England’s got a new Queen,” a picture of Elton John was flashed.  There was a really good write up about the show by Jim Harrington of the San Jose Mercury, which I printed and added to the last pages.

In 2012 I read that Billy Joel did not want to do the Face to Face tours anymore because he said it “restricted his set list.”  Sir Elton had another reason for not wanting to tour with Billy Joel, stating that he was drinking a little too much.  Last I read, though, they had “patched things up” and were friends again, although no touring together planned.

There is “E.”  Have you ever seen Sir Elton or Billy Joel?  Used a MISTI?  Love to hear comments!

April 2017 – #Atozchallenge – Diving into D

D is for Def Leppard.  This is another group that we have seen several times now but I only have our first show in the concert album.  This was from August of 2006 when we saw them with Journey (they’ll make an appearance later in the alphabet).

This was only the second concert we had been to in a long time and the first time I had ever been to Shoreline.  We had gotten a sitter for the night and decided to make the most of it and got a motel room close to the venue, even though it only takes 45 minutes to drive home!  We didn’t get out much back then.
Again, a pretty simple layout for these pictures.

Def Leppard is one of the bands that I didn’t know the background story about but I knew I liked their songs.  When I saw the movie Hysteria and learned about Rick Allen losing his arm and yet continuing to play the drums, I really wanted to see them live.

In this concert they did not disappoint.  We’ve seen them a couple of times since then and although I have better pictures, the show itself was not as good.  They have had really poor sound systems and the bass gets so overpowering that you can’t even hear the singing.  It was so bad during the last one we went to that we ended up leaving early.  Shame because we had REALLY good seats that time!

Okay, that’s D.  So far so good.

April 2017 – #Atozchallenge – Continuing with C

One of the artists that has been around awhile but whom we’d never seen was Cher.  She said she was making a final tour in 2002 and then seems to continue to tour every few years.  When I saw she was going to be at SAP Center in San Jose, I was determined to see her.  Once again, our seats were not the up close and personal that I like to get, but we were able to see her and the monitors so I managed to get some good pictures.  Cyndi Lauper was her opening act, so she gets showcased as well for the letter C.

Once again, I started with a search for papers that would complement the photos.

This paper is also from Paper Wishes and is called Mirage Double-Sided paper.  I thought the name of the paper matched as well, since Cher changed her outfit with almost every song and had a lot of circus-type stuff going on behind her during the show.

I used another template from Lea France, this time the “Say Cheese!” stencil.  In addition I used it twice, turning it sideways for one page, thereby creating a totally different look for each page.  On the first page, the one of Cyndi Lauper, I backed the pictures with a large black sheet, cut in the main shape of a camera.

On the Cher page, I left the background alone and just added some stickers.  That’s what makes these templates so useful.  You can do many different things with them.  If you look closely, you can tell that I switched paper from the picture above to the final one below.  That’s another part of the process.  Once the pictures are placed, I don’t always like my first choice of background paper.

Sometimes when I have small things that I want to attach to a page, I use this Xyron sticker maker.  It’s like magic.

Here are the finished pages.  I managed another 10 for this concert!

It was kind of funny because Cyndi Lauper stopped one of her songs in the middle to take a camera away from somebody in the front row.  She asked him if he was video taping her and she told him to stop looking through the camera and live in the moment!  At that point I was glad I wasn’t sitting closer!

As I said, Cher changed outfits with almost every song and had a whole circus going on behind her, including acrobats flying above and sword swallowers!

She even had a trojan horse!

She did a lot of chatting with the audience too, commenting on how old she was and yet how she cold still get into her “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit (“Take that Katy Perry!” she said).  She did look pretty darn good for 68!

She said she couldn’t do a concert without mentioning Sonny and did a virtual duet with him, showing footage of them from their early years.  It was quite touching.  For the final number she got up on this little platform that was attached to pulleys and glided her way around the arena, singing and waving to her fans.  I’m so glad we got to see her.

And there we have C for Cher (and Cyndi Lauper).  Hope you enjoyed the show šŸ™‚  Feel free to leave me a comment.  I love them!  Also, click on one of my “follow” links so you don’t miss any of the alphabet!

April 2017 – #Atozchallenge – Beginning with B

Being perfectly honest here I’m probably not as prepared for this challenge as I would like to be and, as I have stated before, I am seriously behind in my scrapbooking of the concerts since I am just finishing the year 2009!  However, I also think that rather than just slap something together because of the challenge, I’m going to work with what I have, just as I did when I was going to the concerts.  After all, I can always do this for the challenge again next year and showcase my more recent work, right?

In the beginning I didn’t have a very good camera and it had relatively NO zoom so the picture quality and quantity were not very good.  Still, with a little imagination and help from scrapbooking supplies, I managed to capture the essence of the show.

For B I am using Bon Jovi.  This is a band that we have seen 3 times now so I know I have better pictures, but this was the first time we saw him, in April of 2008 during his Lost Highway tour.  I didn’t even have my routine down yet and there are no pictures of us!

The top right picture is a tag they were giving out at the concert.  The other two pictures are of a T-shirt that we bought from some vendors in the street after the show.
I don’t always take pictures of the opening acts because most of the time they are little-known local talents and I am not usually impressed.  Opening for Bon Jovi on this tour, however, was Daughtry and I really like him.  Still, from our seats, these were the best pictures I could get.  I did remember to get the set list for him.  The strip in the middle of the page was made using this punch from EK Success and I used some of the “outies” in the upper right corner:
Just as my picture taking had not developed yet, my scrapbooking style was pretty simple as well.  I didn’t have as many supplies and I think I lose just a little inspiration when I know the pictures are not the best.  Inside the little circles are rhinestone dots to add a bit of sparkle to the page.
These two pages are made using overlays, so all the black lines are actually like a frame and I just put the pictures in the different openings.

I can still remember this show very clearly though because one section over from where we were sitting, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora came and stood in the middle of the crowd to sing “You Want to Make a Memory” and it was exciting to be so close.  Those are the pictures with Jon in the blue shirt.

If you caught the post for the letter “A”, you can see that each concert is quite different.  Adele had 10 pages and this first Bon Jovi show had only 5.  Excellent memories for both though!  So, there you have B.  Make sure to click on one of my “follow” buttons if you want to catch the rest of my alphabet and don’t forget to click over to the main A to Z Challenge page to see what other participants have come up with for this letter.  Wonder what C has for us?

April 2017 – #Atozchallenge – We begin with A

The A to Z Challenge begins today and as I said in my Theme Reveal post, I am going to combine my two passions, scrapbooking and concert going and share the Concert Album I am making.  Since I am going to be actually making some of the pages for this challenge, a few of the posts will be more descriptive about the techniques I use.  Others will be of pages I have already made and so I won’t be putting the step by steps.

Therefore, without further ado…

A is for:  Adele

Interestingly, I wrote about how hard it was to get tickets for this show last year in my A to Z post of the letter “T”.  I was beyond excited to get a text message saying that new tickets were available and jumped on the chance, even though they were not in my usual “up close and personal” section.

In working on my scrapbooking, the first thing I do is try and find papers that coordinate with the pictures.

First I check the colors that are in the pictures and compare them with the colors of the papers.  I really liked the way these papers had what looked like lots of twinkling lights because I knew they would go well with the sparkles on Adele’s dress and the picture I had taken of the lights in the crowd.  The papers are from Paper Wishes, the Floral Fantasy collection.

The next thing is picture placement on the pages.  Sometimes I have a lot of pictures that I want to include and for those I use templates designed by Lea France:

I have a bunch of them but I chose the Rosette Stencil for this group of pictures.

Once I put the stencil down on the paper I move the pictures around until I find the spot that works best and then I mark them and cut them out.

To make the pictures stand out on the page I outlined them with Nuvo Crystal Drops in Pale Gold.  That really made them pop because the outlining is puffy on the page.

Sometimes it takes me a long time to decide which pictures to put where and what embellishments to use and I usually do one page (or two side by side) completely before I start on the next one.  This time I made all the pages first and then went back to embellish.  I found that I didn’t like that way because when I went to put some of the embellishments on, the picture placement wasn’t quite right so I had to carefully unstick them and move them around.  Fortunately I didn’t wreck any pages, but lesson learned.

There are certain things that I try to include in each concert set:  A picture of us either on the way to the show or in our seats, the tickets and a set list of songs the group played.  Sometimes, if I can find it, I’ll include a review of the show from the newspaper or online.  I also do some journaling to tell any special stories about things that happened during the show.

Here is my completed set for the Adele show.  It turned out to be 10 pages!

That’s us on BART on the way to the show.  I think the Rosette template worked well here.

The special effects used on this song were just amazing.

The page on the left is one where I had to move the pictures around in order to fit the journaling card.

This one has the set list.

Here is a close up of the last one with my special souvenirs:

And there we have the letter A for Adele.  Hope you enjoyed reading about my scrapbooking techniques.  I love reliving the concerts in this way.
